Ilhéos
Hotel and Colonel’s Restaurant
This hotel was built in 1930 by the
Colonel Misael Tavares in order to
host the businessmen and visitors
who disembarked in the pier and shelter
his private bank and two cocoa warehouse
in the first floor of the building.
It was the fruit of the Colonel’s
entrepreneur vision and pioneer spirit,
who was the biggest individual cocoa
producer in the world and wanted to
compare Ilhéus to the biggest
cities. They say that he was a great
enjoyer of the pleasures of the table
and in its opening he ordered that
the cuisine and menu were French.
Rua Eustáquio Bastos, 144.

Old
Pier
The first cargo ship to moor in the
old pier was the Sweden Falco, in
January of 1926. As a hard to reach
pier, due to the narrow canal of the
barra, the "alvarengas"
used to carry the cocoa sacks to the
ships.
The ilheenses
(Ilhéus dwellers) used to visit
it frequently to see who arrived or
who departed, drink beer on board,
buy fresh fish and keep up with the
fashion and the news from abroad.
It was the "point" of the
moment. With the construction of the
new pier, the old one became a post
card, witness of that golden age.

The Bataclan
Main reference of the bohemia life
in the 20’s, the Bataclan had
a saloon where waltz, tango, fox-trot
and samba-canção could
be danced, with all the class and
elegance of the rich and old games
of that age.
It was common
the presence of powerful colonels,
with high collar in their linen suits
and of great artists, attracted by
the women coming from all over the
world. The cabaret was the center
of the night life in the area, where
you could spend the night long with
music, cigar smoke and around dice
poker tables. Stage of great love,
passion and disputes cited in the
novel Gabriela Cravo e Canela. The
building today is in process of restoration
to be again a tourism-cultural attraction.
It is located at Av. 2 de Julho.

Old
Mariners restaurant and the Christ
the Redeemer
The restaurant is inspired in the
character of Quincas Berro D'Água
and the cunning captain of long course
Vasco Moscoso de Aragão, characters
of the book Os Velhos Marinheiros.
With view to the sea, the restaurant
is one of the main attractions in
the tourism-cultural route.
In
1942 the Cristo Redentor was inaugurated,
a happening of full repercussion.
When the Av. 2 de Julho was beautifully
adorned with flags and received a
big crowd. The statue, which was over
7 meters (23 feet) high, at the entrance
of the barra, blesses everyone who
comes from the sea, land and air.
It is an ideal tourism attraction
for taking pictures, with a great
view of the beautiful Pontal bay and
the Morro de Pernambuco. Take advantage
of the route and go up the slope that
goes to the Oiteiro de S. Sebastião.
You can see the little church of N.S.
de Lourdes from there, the symbol
of the captaincy of S. Jorge de Ilhéus,
besides the pleasant city’s
belvedere.
